Obituary: Douglas B. Leigh Jr., formerly of Huntington and Weston

Douglas B. Leigh Jr., formerly of Huntington and Weston, artist and advertising executive, husband of the late Nancy Leigh, died Feb. 28.

Born Jan. 10, 1925; World War II veteran; art director for 20 years with many New York City ad agencies, before joining with two other ad men to form Wilson, Ryan & Leigh in Westport; then opened his own agency and creative service under the name Doug Leigh & Company.

Survived by his daughter, Diane Berry Leigh, his son, Douglas Leigh III, and his grandson, Matthew W. Reinheimer.

A memorial service will be held at Norfield Congregational Church in Weston, on Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Salvation Army is suggested.

Born in New Haven on July 21, 1928, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Kuletski) Rukla. Survived by children, Cindy Rotman and Peter J. Malec, grandchildren, Lisa Todd and her husband Scott, Tracy Rotman and his wife Catherine, Christopher Rotman, and P.J. Capece, great-grandchildren, Nicole and Daniel Todd, and many nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by a brother, Nicholas Rukla and three sisters, Helen Kuchko, Katherine Gramm, and Vera Guk.

Antoinette (Galaty) Caggianello, 94, of Shelton, worked at Remington Arms and Sacred Heart University, wife of the late V. James (Jim) Caggianello, died Feb. 27.

Survived by her children, Toni Ann Simpson, Christine Woods and husband James, and Anthony Caggianello and wife Jan, sister, Elsie Sabatino, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary Kiraly Galaty, and eight brothers and sisters.

Mary Ann Hannan, 86, of Trumbull, wife of the late Raymond Hannan, died March 1, at CT Hospice.

Born Aug. 11, 1929, in Bridgeport, to the late Walter and Elizabeth Redmond.

Survived by son, Mike Hannan and his wife, Marty of Madison, Ala., Pete Hannan of Milford, daughter-in-law, Kelli Hannan of Shelton, John Hannan and his wife, Barbara, of Trumbull, and Anne Hannan of Stratford, seven grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Also predeceased by her twin brother, who died at birth.

Theresa A. VanSlyke, R.N., 56, of Shelton, worked for the State of Connecticut Greater Bridgeport Community Mental Health Center as a supervisor, wife of William L. VanSlyke, died March 6, at home.

Born in Queens, NY, May 20, 1959, to the late John A. and Theresa Schuman Conway.

Besides her husband, she is survived by sons, Brian W. VanSlyke of Studio City, Calif., Eric A. VanSlyke of Burbank, Calif., and Nicholas J. VanSlyke of Shelton; brothers, Keith Conway of Floral Park, N.Y., John Conway of Miller Place, N.Y., Dennis Conway of Holbrook, N.Y., Kevin Conway of Yaphank, N.Y., Robert Conway of Island Park, N.Y., and James Conway of Bayport, N.Y., and by several nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by sisters, Karen Conway and Sharon DePace.

Benjamin F Wells Jr., 88, of Largo, Florida, entered to rest March 4, 2016 at Mid Pinellas Care Center in Pinellas Park, FL. Devoted husband of Myrtle Y Wells for 65 years.

Mr. Wells was born in Bridgeport, CT October 1, 1927 son of the late Benjamin and Ester Demmon Wells, and late brother Richard Wells.

He was a graduate of Shelton High School and enlisted in the US Navy during WW II. After his discharge he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. He worked for Glover and Regan Construction Company in Shelton, CT until moving to Florida, where he opened his own business, “Uncle Ben’s Woodcraft.”

He was the father of daughter Eileen Wells Bialek and husband Gene of Bethlehem, CT, and son Bruce Wells and wife Denise of Oxford, CT. Grandfather to Tracy Hernandez, Sarah Bialek, Timothy, Brian, and Kimberly Wells. Also survived by sister-in-law to Lucille Wells and brother-in-law Gerald Young and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services at Riverside Cemetery, Shelton will be at the convenience of the family.

Born in Bridgeport to the late Bernard and Anne Marie Lavin; U.S. Army.

Survivors inlcude his son Gerald Lavin of Milford; one sister Mary Sorge of Shelton; three brothers Bernard Lavin Jr. and his wife Laura of Clinton, William Lavin and his wife Marianne of Guilford, and Kevin Lavin of Bridgeport; and many nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by his sister Maureen Sheridan, Patsy Puglia and Shaun Lavin.

Born in Bridgeport June 12, 1926, daughter of the late Fred and Rose Czeperak Raduk.

Survived by a nephew, Serge Harabosky of Newtown and great-nieces, Alexandra Harabosky of Switzerland and Anna Harabosky of NYC; and many cousins and friends.

Services: Friday, March 18, 10 a.m., Three Saints Orthodox Church, 26 Howard Avenue, Ansonia. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Stratford. Visiting hours: Friday, 9-10 a.m., prior to the service.

Ralph J. Lombardi, 79, husband of Monica Boulay Lombardi, died March 12, at home.

Born in Ansonia on June 24, 1936, son of the late Pasquale and Michelina Giarratano Lombardi; U.S. Army; communicant of St. Augustine Church, Seymour where he served daily Mass for 10 years; awarded the Saint Joseph Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation in 2012, by Archbishop Henry J. Mansell, DD.

Also survived by a son, Christopher Lombardi of Bangkok, Thailand, a daughter, Lynn Lombardi of Fountain Valley, Calif., a sister, Jean Michalak of Shelton, nephews, Joseph Michalak (Claire), Lawrence Michalak (Lorie) and their children, many cousins, and his wife’s children, Daniel Pantaleo (Sandra) and Kathryn Pantaleo.

Visiting hours: Tuesday, March 15, 4-7 p.m., Spinelli-Ricciuti/Bednar-Osiecki funeral home, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. Bernard E. Beres, 93, of Seymour, husband of the late Helen Sabo Beres, died March 18, at the West Haven VA Medical Center.

Born in Northampton, Mass. on Sept. 15, 1922, he was the son of the late Martin and Blanche Golembiesky Beres; U.S. Navy veteran of World War II; worked as a machinist and model maker for the Farrel, Sikorsky, and Gillette companies and retired from Bic Pen Corp. following 25 years of employment.

Survived by his children, Paul (Nancy) Beres of Seymour and Bernadette (David) Glass of Idaho; grandchildren, Kimberly (Blake) MacKinney of Oxford, Erica (Jason) Schoerner of Florida, Jessica Ledbetter of Idaho and Amanda (Christopher) Drake of Idaho, 12 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; and his companion and her family, Jane Randall of Shelton.

Also predeceased by sisters, Helen Husti, Mary Markut, Genevieve Vitali; and great-grandson Silar Swallow.

Michael A. Kucher, 54, died March 16, at Yale-New Haven Hospital, following injuries he sustained after being struck by a vehicle as he was walking.

Born in New Haven on Oct. 27, 1961, son of the late Stanley and Gloria Tullo Kucher.

Survived by sisters, Chris-Ann Kucher of Shelton, Mary-Ann Kucher of South Portland, Maine, Stacey M. Mentz (Paul) of Derby and Jamie C. Kucher of Beacon Falls, a niece, Chelsea M. Beedle of Beacon Falls and nephews, Wesley Tilquist of Oxford, Timothy E. Beedle of Beacon Falls and Dakota J. Kucher of Maine.

Also predeceased by a nephew, Joseph Novisky.

Visiting hours are Monday March 22, 4-7 p.m., in the chapel of the Spinelli-Ricciuti/Bednar-Osiecki Funeral Home, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Tuesday, his funeral will take place at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Church in Ansonia. Burial will immediately follow in the family plot in Northwest Cemetery in Woodbridge.

Raymond J. DeNomme, 85, of Trumbull, husband of Ruth Zak DeNomme, died March 17, in St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Born in Bridgeport on May 15, 1930, son of the late George Arcade and Anna Thibault DeNomme; employed thirty-five years by United Technologies Corporation, first with Sikorsky Aircraft and then with Norden Systems.

Besides his wife, survivors include his children, Laura Abriola and husband, Darryl of Orange, Richard DeNomme and wife, Holly of Milford, William DeNomme and wife, Jill of Trumbull, Lisa Fazzino and husband, Paul of Shelton, and David DeNomme and wife, Dana of Trumbull, and 11 grandchildren.

Burial: Nichols Village Cemetery.

Ryan Frederick Shaw, 24, of Trumbull, 2016 graduate of Porter and Chester Institute in Stratford and a 2010 graduate of Trumbull High School, died March 23.

Born Oct. 2, 1991, in Bridgeport, son of Liza M. Charest of Fort Meyers, Fla. and the late Kevin G. Shaw of Southbury.

Besides his mother, survivors include his brother, Corey E. Shaw of Shelton, his sister, Brittany A. Shaw of Pottstown, Pa., his uncle, Edward F. Shaw Jr. of New Britain, an aunt, Christine Kuehn, her son, Thomas Kuehn Jr. and his sons, Alex and Kyle, all of Trumbull with whom he resided, and many other cousins and friends.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., Feb. 4, 1936, daughter of the late James and Mary (McDonald) O’Connor.

Survived by two sons, James Hampton and his wife, Karen of Long Island and Kenneth Hampton of Stratford, three daughters, Maryanne Houghton of Shelton, Theresa Hampton of the Bronx and Christine Feliciano and her husband, Luis of Stratford, 10 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Arline (Minnie) M. Eastwood

Arline (Minnie) M. Eastwood, age 86, of Monroe, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 19, 2016.

Born in Stratford, CT on July 26, 1929. She was the daughter of the late John and Ann Lian.

She raised her family in Monroe, CT and worked for many years at DM Read’s and Innovation Luggage.

Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gardner C. Eastwood.

Survivors include her son, Gary Eastwood of Monroe, her daughter, Linda Gagner and her son-in-law, Brian of Shelton. Minnie will be sadly missed by her three grandchildren, BriaLyn, Arron and Austin Gagner of Shelton. She is also survived by her brother, Jack Lian and his wife, MaryAnn of Arizona, and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service in her honor and held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 10:00 AM at St. Jude Church, 707 Monroe Tpke., Monroe.

Albert M. Payne, 87, of Shelton, formerly of Seymour, electronics technician for the Philips Medical Co. of Shelton, husband of the late Gladys Jervis Payne, died March 25, at the Hewitt Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., son of the late Marion A. and Dena Rose Payne.

Survived by his daughter, Allison Payne of Ansonia, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by a daughter, Linda Spellman and a sister, Edna Avallone.
