John P. Kempf, 86, of Shelton, president of J. P. Kempf Company, husband of Arline (Hennessey) Kempf, died Feb. 4, in CT Hospice.

Born in South Norwalk on Nov. 28, 1929, son of the late John H. and Martha (Rosenthal) Kempf; U.S. Navy, Korean War.

Also survived by children, John P. Kempf, Jr., Nancy E. Hines and her husband, Michael, and the late Jane M. Kempf; siblings, Bessie McVay, Katherine Budin, and the late Margaret Polacik, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret “Peggie” Sullivan Loris, 57, of Shelton, educator in the Norwalk Public School System for 33 years, retired from Nathan Hale Middle School as a Team Leader and a Subject Area Leader, wife of Richard Loris, died Feb. 5, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Born in West Springfield Mass. on Nov. 29, 1958, daughter of Thomas Sullivan, of East Otis, Mass. and Palm City, Fla. and the late Margaret Gray Sullivan.

Besides her husband and father, survivors include three children, Ryan Loris and his wife, Carly, Daniel Loris and his wife, Jennifer, and Nicole Loris and her companion, Jesse Duncan, five grandchildren, 13 brothers and sisters, Anne Marie Carlson, Michael, Thomas, Robert, Stephen, George, Eileen, Mark, Mary, Paul, Kevin, and William Sullivan, and Amy Judy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Also predeceased by her sister, Lucy Sullivan Stoney.

Services: Tuesday, Feb. 9, 11 a.m., St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull. Burial will follow in the in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Stratford. Visiting hours: Monday, 4-7 p.m., Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.

Christine (Parker) Langella, 83, of  Trumbull, floor manager at the landmark Maxwell House Hotel In Nashville, wife of the late Henry B. Langella, died Feb. 5, in the Jewish Home for the Elderly.

Born in Nashville, Tenn. to the late Howard and Adell Parker.

Also predeceased by her son, Daniel Langella.

Survived by three children, Angela Scott of Nashville, Tenn., David Parker and his wife, Gina of Shelton, and  Laura Bell and her husband, Russell of North Haven; two sisters, Freda Beard and Nancy Sue Todd and her husband, Gerald all of Tennessee, 27 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Stephen D. Ford, 60, of Shelton, aviator, superintendent of operations at Sikorsky Memorial Airport, husband of Robbin Wyatt Ford, died Feb. 7, at Griffin Hospital in Derby.

Born in Cambridge, Mass. on Jan. 26, 1956, son of Mary Hubbard Ford of Monroe and the late Daniel G. Ford; U.S. Army.

Helen Uzarski Sherwinsky, 88, of Seymour, worked for the Uniroyal Company of Naugatuck, wife of the late Edward Sherwinsky, died Feb. 7.

Born in Derby on March 23, 1927, daughter of the late Stanley and Irma Porga Uzarski.  

Survived by son, Mark Sherwinsky and his wife, Susan of Shelton, daughter, Diane Sherwinsky of Derby, brother, Thomas Uzarski and his wife, Rose of Shelton, a sister-in-law, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by her brother, Stanley Uzarski.

Anthony T. Tagariello, 84, of Shelton, formerly of Norwalk, employed at Mount Vernon Die Casting and Nash Engineering, husband of Patricia Bria Tagariello, died Feb. 14, at Shelton Lakes Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Jan. 1, 1932, in NYC to the late Guiseppe and Vincenza (LaManna) Tagariello; U.S. Army, Korean Conflict.

Survived by two sons, James Tagariello (Danielle) and Scott Tagariello, four grandchildren, a sister, Anne Bari of Queens, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by his brother, James Tagariello.

Lina Lucarelli, 92, co-founder of Roseland Apizza dies

Below is a statement made on the passing of Lina Lucarelli by Marc J. Garofalo, MPA, Town / City Clerk, City of Derby.

We regret to inform you that Lina Lucarelli, co-founder of the world famous Roseland Apizza passed away on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the age of 92.

Mrs. Lucarelli was an icon of Derby having served generations and thousands of hungry customers at the venerable Hawthorne Avenue restaurant.  Her impact on the community will long be remembered by the high quality of pizza and dinners served, and the tradition of excellence for which Roseland is known.

Please join Mayor Anita Dugatto and the entire City of Derby in expressing our deepest sympathy to the Lucarelli and Scatolini family on the loss of their matriarch.  May she rest in peace in Pizza Heaven!

Mayor Dugatto commented that “Everyone knows that the best pizza in the world is made right here in Derby at Roseland.  Lina’s leadership as owner, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend made her one of the respected role models for women throughout the State.  She will be missed by all who knew her.”

OBITUARY: Lina Lucarelli

Lina S. Lucarelli, age 92, of Derby, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, February 13, 2016. She was the beloved and devoted matriarch of the Lucarelli family and co-founder of Roseland Apizza in Derby, CT where she worked alongside her husband Nazzareno “Bocci” Lucarelli until his passing in 1980.

She was born in Montebello, Italy, on September 30, 1923, daughter of the late John and Adele (Rossi) Scatolini and emigrated to the U.S.at the age of seven to escape Mussolini. She graduated from Derby High School and was awarded her bachelor’s degree from Sacred Heart University later in life. In 2010, she accepted the Dr. John I. Howe Award from the Derby Historical Society as recognition for her legacy, Roseland Apizza.

She was an entrepreneur and real estate investor ahead of her time. She also enjoyed traveling the world, reading, gardening, drinking tea, and cooking Le Marchegian dishes from her childhood. Lina spent her golden years walking to Roseland Apizza daily and was dedicated to running the restaurant alongside her sons in the kitchen. Everyone received free bread under her reign, and the wait was never more than an hour even if you sat there for three.

She leaves behind five children, John Lucarelli and his wife, Colleen, Gary Lucarelli, Denis “Denmo” Lucarelli, Adele Larsen and her husband, Edward, and Marisa Tascione and her husband, Vincent “Fez”. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Gary, Jessica, Krista, Kara, Laura, Erika, Carly, Casey, Eddy Joe, Jess, Kirstin, Chloé, Johnny Blake, Elyse, Chelsea, & Riana and seven great-grandchildren, Isabel, Reno, Zachary, Cody, Michael, Carter, and Kash, as well as many nephews and nieces.

Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Claire Dirienzo, her brother, Reno Scatolini, and her great-granddaughter, Jamie Russell.

We will all miss her passatellis, gnocchis, risotto, cappellettis, and her loving and generous nature. Nini we will miss and love you forever.

Friends may greet her family on Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth Street, Derby. On Thursday, Feb. 18, her funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery, Derby.

Helen Pczonka Dripchak, 92, of Derby, former city clerk for the City of Derby, wife of Stephen Edward Dripchak, died Feb. 17,  at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford.

Born Sept. 6, 1923 to the late Josephine (Surdel) Pczonka and the late Frank Pczonka.

Survived by sons, David Dripchak and his wife, Susan, of Shelton, and Stephen Dripchak Jr. and his wife, Kimberly, of upper Montclair, N.J., 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, her sister, Mary Tracz of Derby, and several nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her daughter, Pamela Dripchak, her brother, Frank Pczonka Jr., and her sister, Genevieve Wailionis.

Obituary: William H. Godwin, formerly of Shelton

William H. Godwin, aka “Frank Brady,” a presence in the Fairfield community, died suddenly in Bridgeport after being hit by a car on February 6, 2016.

Born in Bridgeport on June 20, 1928, Frank formerly lived in the Pine Rock Park area of Shelton and more recently at the Park City Residential Care Home in Bridgeport.

Frank served briefly in the U.S. Army and worked as a laborer for various companies throughout Connecticut and New York.

Frank had the gift of conversation and he could be seen chatting during the day with people in town discussing sports, politics and history. He always knew what was going on around town and loved to share it with his many friends. He touched everyone he knew and people left feeling uplifted by their conversations with him.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m., at First Church Congregational in Fairfield. Friends are invited to tell a story about Frank and how he affected their life on our online guestbook.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory in care of the funeral home.

Edward J. Kozlowski

Edward J. Kozlowski, 89, longtime resident of Milford, husband of Dorothy Rindos Kozlowski, died Feb. 18.

Born in Bridgeport on July 9, 1926 to the late August Kozlowski and Anna Biologlowy Kozlowski. Edward began his school years in Milford from kindergarten to high school. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served for 2 ½ years from 1943 to 1946. In 1946, he and twenty of his fellow students entered the service and received their high school diplomas in absentia. He was in the Pacific theater stationed at Pearl Harbor and received an honorable discharge as Second Class Petty Officer Torpedo Man.

He attended Clarkson University, accompanied by his first wife Joan Sapitowicz and graduated in 1951 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. Edward worked as a machine designer and administrative engineer at the Bullard Company for nineteen years. This is where he met his second wife Theresa, they were married for 35 years.

Edward also served as the CT Division President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was active with the youth of the City of Milford and became an assistant Scout Master for Troop 1 and also managed several little league baseball teams. Politics was a strong interest and in 1967 he came an alderman. He proceeded to become the first Republican Mayor in Milford from 1969 to 1971. He was able to stop the planned five-million-dollar incinerator and built an alternative method for waste disposal which was the first municipal shredder in New England.

Edward solved many viaduct flooding problems in Milford and created 12 small neighborhood recreation parks for children, known as parkettes. Edward accepted the position of CT State Commissioner of Public Works and later was appointed State of CT Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. He used this opportunity to do outstanding things for the Polish community. Edward was responsible for the construction and naming of the Nicolas Copernicus Hall Science Building at CCSU, the repaving of three runways at Bradley International Airport and Platt Regional Technical School in Milford.

An accomplished man, Edward also broke the construction log jam of work stoppage at the UCONN Medical/Dental Center in Farmington and paved the way for its final completion, a sixty-four-million-dollar project.

Besides his wife Dorothy, he is survived by his children, Andrea (R.J.) Alexander of Trumbull, Edward (Teri) of Milford, John (Ellen) of Shelton, Michael (Jody) of Milford, Andrew of Milford, sister, Regina Griffing of Oxford, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Also predeceased by his siblings, Joseph, Helen, Sophie, and Lucy.

Calling hours are Monday, February 22, 4-8 p.m., at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 23, at 10 a.m., at Christ the Redeemer Church, 325 Oronoque Rd, Milford. MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Buckingham Ave, Milford.

Born March 23, 1921, in Bridgeport, daughter of the late Joseph and Julia Paizer Palmucci.

Survived by two daughters, Lynn Fontana of Venice, Fla., and Joan Fontana-Schwartz of Sarasota, Fla., granddaughter, Jessica Selvog of Venice, Fla., brother, Joseph Palmucci and wife, Lucille of Ansonia, and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce Saldamarco

Joyce Saldamarco, 67, of Westbrook, wife of the late James Saldamarco Sr., died peacefully on Feb. 14, 2016 in Savannah, Georgia, with her loving family by her side.

She was born Feb. 9, 1949, in New Haven, daughter of the late Lindsey and Esther McGinnis.

Joyce was a loved member of her community well known for her many acts of kindness, including cooking meals, giving rides or just lending a friendly piece of advice.

Joyce loved her dogs, her garden, the beach and all that nature showed her. Joyce carried with her a strong faith in God and relied on him for all her hardships.

Joyce’s priority was her family and friends, affectionately known as “Aunt Joyce” to so many, and touched everyone who came in contact with her in a special way.

Joyce is survived by sons, Mike and Jason Mann of Westbrook, James Saldamarco Jr. of Shelton, and was a loving sister to Jean Saldamarco (Andrew) of Georgia, Joan McGinnis of California and Marty Kevalis and special sister-in-law, Lynn of Ansonia. She also leaves special nephews, Marty (Tricia) and Justin Kevalis, special nieces, Kerin Patrie and Raina Williams and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Joyce was predeceased by her brothers, James McGinnis and Joseph Kevalis and a loving nephew, John Kevalis.

Born in Derby on March 6, 1930, daughter of the late Edward and Helen (Culik) Manion.

Angela Stellato

Angela Stellato, 89, of Shelton, entered into a very peaceful eternal rest on February 23, 2016, at Connecticut Hospice, in Branford, with family by her side.

She was born on May 23, 1926, in Vitulazio, Italy, to the late Teresa Di Donato Russo and the late Francisco Russo.

Angela will be missed by her loving husband of 69 years, Antonio Stellato, and three children, Lina Luciano and her husband, Joseph Luciano, of Trumbull; John Stellato and his wife, Valerie Stellato, of Mahopac, NY; Theresa Balas and her husband, Markus Balas, of Shelton. Angela was also a loving Nonna to Joseph Luciano and his wife, Michelle Luciano; Vito Luciano; Anne Marie Martini and husband, Mark Martini; Carlo Luciano and his wife, Kelly Luciano, Paul Stellato, Nicole Stellato, Michael McClure, and Angela Swingle and husband, Paul Swingle. She was also blessed with being a great grandmother to Julianna Luciano, Ellie and Steven Luciano, and Anthony and Ava Martini.

Angela’s family and her faith in God meant everything to her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 29, at 10:00 AM, At St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown. Entombment will follow in Ferncliff Mausoleum, 289-284 Secor Road, in Hartsdale, NY.

William D. Ruocco, 89, of Florida and Shelton, formerly of Trumbull, technical representative at General Electric, husband of the late Rosalie Minai Ruocco, died Feb. 27, at the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Born Nov. 15, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Michael and Mary DiFabio Ruocco; U.S. Coast Guard veteran, World War II Merchant Marines.

Survived by daughters, Laura Pulie and her husband, Richard of Trumbull and Jeanne Wolf and her husband, Michael of Broad Brook, and six grandchildren.

Also predeceased by his daughter, Donamarie Barrows and his brother, Dominic Ruocco.

Services: Thursday, March 3, 9 a.m., St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main St., Trumbull. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Visiting hours: Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull.

Patsy Dogali, 95, of Stratford, bus driver for the Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority, husband of Ann Marie Maceyunas Dogali, died Feb. 27, at Bridgeport Hospital.

Born in Bridgeport March 15, 1920, son of the late Michael and Josephine Perrilli Dogali; U.S. Army veteran, World War II.

Besides his wife, survivors include his children, Carol Ann Bender and her husband, James of Bridgeport and Michael J. Dogali and his wife, Jacqueline of Shelton and four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Also predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Nicholas, Tony and James Dogali and sisters, Mary Vertucci, Anna Costello, Concetta Dogali and Teresa Dumas.

Services: Thursday, March 3, 9:30 a.m., Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull and at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Church, Stratford. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Visiting hours: Wednesday, 4-8 p.m.

Obituary: Eddy Tyler Conklin, 17, of Shelton

Eddy Tyler Conklin, 17, of Shelton, died on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2016, in Bridgeport Hospital surrounded by his family.

Eddy was born in New Haven on June 6, 1998, son of Edmund M. and Barbara (Wiedmeyer) Conklin, and was a lifelong Shelton resident.

He was a member of Shelton High School class of 2016. He was a varsity basketball player and also played JV baseball.

Eddy enjoyed playing “Call of Duty,” was a daredevil, had a great sense of humor, and also loved fishing and all outdoor activities.

He will be missed by his many friends who loved him very much.

He is the loving brother of Ashley Conklin, and the cherished grandson of Edmund J. Conklin. He also leaves his Great Aunt Dottie, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Friends may greet his family on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. On Saturday friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m., at St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Avenue, Shelton. Burial will be private in Lawn Cemetery in the spring.

At the request of his family, contributions in lieu of flowers are requested to The Eddy  Conklin Scholarship Fund to benefit students at Shelton High School, care of 120 Meadow Street Shelton, CT 06484, or through the funeral home.
